Angels For Elders is a social concept and business idea Karen Rust held for many years. After spending 25 years in corporate America, a marriage and a move found her free of corporate bondage and living in the Texas Hill Country, just west of San Marcos, near the two large retirement communities of Wimberley and Canyon Lake. Serving elders, increasing her own education of the myths our society holds about elders, and spreading that knowledge are among her multiple goals for Angels For Elders. Karen Rust has a BBA from the University of Houston. She holds CPA, CCM, and CNA professional certifications, and the Texas Basic Certificate of Gerontology certificate. She is also a certified Nurse Aid. I have always wanted to do something to improve the status and position of the elders in American society. It’s a shame they are so often shuffled off to nursing homes, especially when sometimes they could still remain independent in their own homes, with a little help and at a much lower cost. Living independently for as long as possible is going to become more important in the future, as budgets for government programs and services continue to be stretched by the large aging population majority. And, she continues: Many people today don’t have children, or have only one child, an adult who often does not live near their aging parents. Children are the primary caregivers 80-90% of the time. Parents need to depend on them, yet don’t want to be a burden. Angels is the perfect solution. We are often more useful because we’re not related to those involved. We offer compassionate care without emotional turmoil, guilt, or past relationship scars. One of Karen’s goals is to create many Angels.
